foster here, I would agree that healthy puppies help fund the operations of a Rescue. Nothing wrong with that. Adoption fees have helped fund repaired legs, repaired knee ligaments, repaired urinary tracts.... I've seen it all.

When dogs come to me they do have their basic vaccines and have been dewormed/have flea and tick treatment.

The rescue should provide you with all medical records and those basics should always be done.

You are missing the money angle. Vet care and puppy care is reduced and donated, respectively.

Each puppy will bring in about $400-500 to the rescue, which will be used to help more dogs, pay for the physical kennel location, and pay for cleaning, vehicles, medications, sundries and managing the operation.

Shelters and rescues "benefit" from taking in pregnant strays as long as they can find fosters, to help oil the wheels of their activity.

And don't kid yourself that these dogs are getting top-notch care. When I foster pregnant dogs, there is no usually no vet care. They are seen by the tech coming off the truck (or possibly seen by a previous shelter's vet tech), passed on to me, then they give birth and are seen only for their spay post-partum. The puppies and mom get their shots/dewormers/preventatives with the tech, then they get adopted and vet visits are on the adopters. That's when everything goes well, and it usually does. The few times it doesn't, and the vet needs to intervene, don't cancel out all the profit they make off the well moms and puppies.

Contact Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in Virginia, OP. I am one of their volunteers who takes in pregnant dogs. I cannot at this time, but there are others in their roster.

And to the pitbull poster: the terrier-pitbull puppies that I cared for last year were highly trainable. The litter of beagles that came after... was way more exhausting!

Homeward Trails is an excellent, highly reputable organization that makes fostering as easy as possible for volunteers. Can anyone help this poor momma dog?

We just got an update from the shelter - nobody came to claim her still and no rescue has taken her either, she is sad and depressed in a rural kennel environment. Is there any kind foster who can care for her and her soon to be babies?

This pretty, soon to be momma needs foster this Wednesday.
She is around 40lb pregnant est,2yo Pointer/ Australian cattle dog mix maybe?? Very friendly and mellow with humans and shy with dogs - no information on cats.
She was found wandering rural streets and nobody picked her up - so we don't know much about her history other than that she is super sweet and deserves home to give birth for the last time, not a shelter cage.

Fostering a pregnant and nursing mom is about a 6-8 week commitment - as we can only split the family up when the puppies are 6wo and eat on their own.
We can provide all the supplies and mentorship when needed!
Please let me know who can help her?
