If the mini sink is against the wall, I would keep that and set up some kind of beverage station like in this remodeling photos. You don’t have to keep the bar part that extends into the room.

No you are not making a mistake at all it enjoy every space in your home for 5+ years. For even one year! The piping and electrical can be refashioned to provide a convenient mini kitchen set up (sink, counter, cabinet/shelf for dishes, mini fridge, m/w). Everyone who visits loves it because they imagine shaking up cocktails with a spinning disco ball. Yeah, that will never happen.

Rip it out and make the space work for you.

It’s in the family room in the lower level, which has a fireplace and sliding glass doors to the backyard.

I just bought a new house that was built in the late 70s and has the original built-in bar. It’s well done and has a little fridge and dishwasher, nice bar counter, etc. But I hate it. It’s not my thing and it just takes up space and looks ugly to me. Other people who have come over and seen it seem to love it.

Am I making a huge mistake by wanting to tear it out? Is this something that adds significant value to the house, and by removing it am I lowering the value of the house? We’ll be living here for at least five years, but I don’t know now if we’ll be here into retirement or not.
