Some schools have said they'd leave an empty seat before admitting a student they felt could not manage the curriculum. And they can afford to do that. Similarly, they will add space for a student who is a good fit no matter when they apply. Usually these schools advertise having rolling admissions.

I know my kid’s class has a spot because one student recently decided not to reenroll (later than the usual deadline) due to a move.

We got into and accepted such a spot. We were already local, no move involved, but we explained the reason for our late application. I assume they were just more excited about our overall student and family profile than some of their declines or (I assume) waitpool candidates.
