I hate how they stop all instruction after SOLs. There are SO many fun learning activities they could do!

My FCPS-educated 6th grader can't read or write cursive for gods sakes. They have had three board game days since last week.

I know you are probably new here and weren't around when this whole "built in" hogwash was marketed to the public. They didn't actually "build in" 10 days. They magically "repurposed" 20 min. per day of time that students spent walking from the bus to the classroom and then from the classroom to the bus and called it "instructional time." Voila!... magically built in school days that previously would have had to be made up with ACTUAL instruction (or pretended instruction b/c we know nothing good is happening for learning when there are snow-make-up days on June 20th...). (i.e. 20 min of imaginary instructional time x 180 days = "built in snow days")

So, your kids are just getting gipped out of instruction whenever there are no-school-days from snow or high winds or coldness.

I have said this dozens of times here and on the surveys for calendar-creation. Once June 1st hits, everyone is checked out. It is more productive to start the year earlier in Mid August, and then let people out in the first of June (or first week of June). Mentally, people are still in school mode through May b/c there are AP exams and the weather isn't full on summer yet. The stupid school board keeps pushing the school year into mid June by having so many holidays and days off.

Front-load the learning and let people out early June. It also works well for camps/child care b/c college students are out in early May, so they are ready to run camps by June1st. However, they go back to college (or need to get ready) by Mid August. So, camps lose their staff. Of course, I'm not going to get anywhere with this since they made a 3 yr calendar and by then, my last kid will be out of HS. So, I pass the torch to someone else.

You'd still get a month in the summer but longer breaks throughout the year and throw in some more 4 day weeks.

Having the whole summer off it an antiquated vestige of slower times that are now long gone, time to move on and improve the model.

I don’t want a longer summer break.
