ok ECs.

Is at a T30-50 OOS school ( full pay). We knew his potential and were fortunate enough to be able oos costs - but that definately helped ease the pressure while in TJ

Congrats! That’s great especially when elite admissions seem to be trending downward. What reach/T20 schools did your DC get in?

Incoming TJ freshman parent here .. at the risk of sounding ignorant, can you please clarify what EC stands for ?

It stands for extracurriculars.

Only 5-10 kids got all A’s every graduation class.

Been around TJ for longer than anyone here.

It is not altogether that important to get ALL A’s. What is important is to get mostly A’s, especially in core courses and those related to the student’s eventual intended course of study, if that is known. Final grades are what matter, not quarter grades - so don’t stress too much if a couple of stumbles happen through the year.

None of this will matter if the child isn’t pursuing their passions and developing things that will make them interesting outside of the school day. A couple of extra Bs is worth it for something strong in extracurriculars and outside the sort of traditional TJ activities that hundreds of kids do - stay away from Model UN, Debate, Crew, and Latin. If you’re doing sports, avoid track. All of the above will put you in a big mix of very similar TJ kids and will not help you stand out.

All lies! If you get a B, life is over. You're looking at state college and a life of mediocrity.

You’ll need 4.5+ GPA to be considered by the best schools. That probably gives you room for a couple of B’s in some AP courses.

All A’s? no way. A few B’s is OK.

Colleges look at a bunch of factors, including:

How hard were the courses

Progression (started with Bs but more As later on)

Only red flag would be a B in a subject that is highly related to the intended major. Eg a B in AP Physics

Dont stress too much. The system works. Make sure ur kid is truly learning and having a good time along the way.

It depends. If no hook, you'll need all As, huge spikes, sparkling essays and a ton of good luck to get in a top school. However, if you are legacy, first generation, URM, athlete, or full-pay, chances are you'll get in a decent school with more than one Bs.
