I think it’s two different things. Teens stealing cars for joyrides which has always happened but tiktok makes it easier to learn how. And teens being used by criminal groups who have smartly realized that teens have lower inhibition (eg teen boys make bad choices generally) and they are less likely to go to jail. Same reason they started using them as drug runners and corner dealers in the 80s. It’s always worse in the summer when a lot of teens have spare time. Summer jobs and sports programs help some but for a lot of kids this is more social and exciting than working at county parks and rec.

There was a period when it became really hard for teens to steal a car, because of anti-theft technology, and carjackings by youths increased a lot. They do it because they want a car to get somewhere or for fun. It’s not a profit thing, they just abandon the car in short order.

Now tik tok is making it easy to find out how to steal certain cars so that’s happening too.

"Of the 2023 arrests so far, 110 are adults and 138 are juvenile. The number of juveniles arrested for auto theft so far this year is more than double the number in all of 2022. In 2022, PGPD charged a total of 66 juveniles.

They are. The moco police chief says he has never seen youth violent crime like this and he has been a cop here 38 years.

And there are more dead kids too.

PG County actually arrests people, unlike MoCo.
