I wouldn’t say it’s routine. We had it inspected when we purchased a house (not in this area). At the time the town was paying in part for lateral replacement and we had that done after seeing the inspection. That house was 100 y old. I now like in a 10 year old house in a city that’s younger on average and never did a lateral inspection

I better your neighbor uses Charmin and flushes tampons and wipes. Disaster recipe.

What is wrong with Charmin?! I just googled this and am not seeing anything.

Be careful what you flush - human waste and toilet paper, nothing else - and you'll be fine. No grease, floss, "flushable" wipes, feminine hygiene stuff, etc.

I was just talking with a friend whose basement drain backed up with poop water because of a clogged lateral. She suggested we get ours inspected just in case. Is this a thing people do regularly? FWIW we have an old house without a cleanout in the yard, so I don't even know how it would be possible.
