I agree. I hate driving on vacation, so I'm willing to spend extra for prime locations located IN the spots I want to be, not 30-45 minutes away every day. That gets old very quickly, especially with kids and at the end of a long day of touring.

Once my day is done, I just want to be able to quickly get back to where I'm staying and relax.

I’m thinking it’s like staying on Mackinac Island vs staying at the Hampton on the interstate near the Waffle House.

We have done this in other cities and I actually prefer it to staying in the city center. Parking is easy, it’s quiet, I’m near grocery stores etc if I need to replenish things. We have a high traffic tolerance FWIW

I feel like it's ok to save the $1000.

We are flying into Boston before we visit family in ME. Our original plan was to spend a day exploring Boston, spend the night there before we headed N and check out a couple places along the way (Salem, Manchester-by-the-Sea/Gloucester area) with the plan being to spend a night in each before meeting up with family. But hotels are ridiculously expensive as this is sort of last minute idea.

So I found an OK looking chain hotel (think Hampton) in a centrally located shopping type area. We figured we can take day trips. We will still visit and stay in Boston. We will save around $1000 doing this, but then lose that immersion experience, and the nicer accommodations.

Convince me either way, what to do.
