If your situation is such that you can't afford a home with two bedrooms, then taking on the expense of a pet should be out of the question. Your daughter likely has zero plan for how she is going to pay for the care and feeding of this cat. And I assume she understands that the litter box would need to be in her bedroom and cleaned daily? And that her bedroom door can never be shut? Mother, you tell her no, firmly. But suggest that she volunteer at an animal shelter.

Who is she currently staying with with the cat? Maybe they can take the cat and your daughter can go over to visit. Also, does your apartment have restrictions about pets?

Op. Very good ideas. She doesn't want to come home unless she gets to bring the cat. I am torn but I'm holding steady. I wonder if there is some creative compromise

On the bright side, there are worse things she could have come home with. A loser boyfriend, drugs, STDs, etc.

My kid would never do that because she knows I hate cats. But if she lost her mind temporarily and did it, I'd tell her to go put the cat back where she found it and shower with bleach.

If she left this morning, presumably to go to school, and hasn't come back, you try calling her, and if she doesn't respond, and this is not typical of her, you call the police.

I would not let the 16 year old be in charge.

I live in a one bedroom apartment with my DD who is 16, soon to be 17. She lives in the bedroom and I live in a portion of the common area. We are supposed to share cleaning up, which sometimes happens and sometimes not. Without my permission, she brought a cat home yesterday. I don't want to live with the cat because I know that I will have to clean up after the cat and there simply is not a lot of room in our apartment. I told her my views. So she left with the cat and I haven't seen her today. WWYD?
