FYI, in some religions (Islam, Judaism, others) it's important to bury the dead ASAP. Ideally the day a person dies. It usually happens the next day, even in the US, or within 24 hours.
Whoa, please get your facts straight. In the jewish religion you do NOT bury the person the day they die!

You want hospice to call. Otherwise it has to be treated as potential crime/foul play and no one needs that. Good luck and thank you for being a caring friend.

An elderly relative is in hospice care at home and may pass away tonight. Their spouse has made no arrangements and is too distraught so I offered to help.
I left a message for a funeral home, but not surprising they haven't called back yet as it's a holiday. When they pass away, what happens? Do we need to call an ambulance to come and certify they have passed? Or the funeral home and they come right away to pick it up?
I figure once we get them stored at the funeral home/morgue, then that will buy time for the spouse to figure out actual funeral arrangements. I'm just trying to figure out the first step as this is all new to me.

OP here. I'm guessing they don't want the body sitting around overnight.
