FYI, in some religions (Islam, Judaism, others) it's important to bury the dead ASAP. Ideally the day a person dies. It usually happens the next day, even in the US, or within 24 hours.

Whoa, please get your facts straight. In the jewish religion you do NOT bury the person the day they die!

Yeah, I am not jewish but that would concern me big time. I'd never be able to nap.

OP again. My relative was in touch with hospice and they'll be taking care of everything related to that, so all is good. Thanks for the advice!

You want hospice to call. Otherwise it has to be treated as potential crime/foul play and no one needs that. Good luck and thank you for being a caring friend.

OP here. Thanks -- this is helpful. I'll let them know.

I left a message for a funeral home, but not surprising they haven't called back yet as it's a holiday. When they pass away, what happens? Do we need to call an ambulance to come and certify they have passed? Or the funeral home and they come right away to pick it up?

I figure once we get them stored at the funeral home/morgue, then that will buy time for the spouse to figure out actual funeral arrangements. I'm just trying to figure out the first step as this is all new to me.
The hospice nurse can tell you how close they actually are to death.

OP here. They said tonight or tomorrow. They're on constant morphine at this point I was told. Cancer.

Call the funeral home as soon as they pass. They’ll come get the body.

My mother died under the same circumstances, we called the funeral home and they came right away even though it was after midnight on a Sunday. We had not made any pre-arrangements.

OP here. I'm guessing they don't want the body sitting around overnight.

Hospital will pick up if it happens overnight. Doc has to certify death
