Clearly your MIL is ignorant as your title says. Africa is a MASSIVE and extremely diverse continent, one I have not been privileged enough to visit.

I will say that there is an incredibly high amount of violence against women in South Africa. Your daughter really should be aware of the violence against women, research expectations, and safety recommendations, and prepare accordingly.

I just want to say that mine were nervous when we went to London (and we're Foreign Service who have been in war zones even). I was at a BBQ this past weekend where soooo many people said "I don't want to see anywhere outside the US!" and they all agreed. Except when we ask my inlaws to travel with us to Grand Canyon/Yellowstone/Santa Fe they decline. I agree with them that the US is incredible! But they aren't seeing it either. They're myopic. I also think they're scared of the world around them.
