Don't throw away REA or ED applications on moonshots. Suburban white and asian kids need to be strategic - doubly so when it comes to CS. A quick glance at moco360 shows that in 2022, 36 kids applied from Whitman. 1 got in. 22 kids applied from Walter Johnson. 0 got in. Be realistic. Tell your son to look elsewhere. And it's been a long time since Stanford was laid back

+1 It’s not worth the gamble if the kid has other more realistic ED schools they like.

I've never been to campus, but have been to many Taco Bells... not sure I understand!

I think they are referring to the Mediterranean/Hispanic architecture and I fully agree which is why I didn’t apply there for law school!

One would think the school architecture is not a main reason for not choosing a law school.

My unhooked, non athletic white son is there
He is a math and engineering major

Work very hard, play hard, everyone super smart with interests. Some very connected students. Some emphasis on athletic culture.

Weather is amazing and school has tons of resources (freshman can do school funded research over the summer), school allows time for outside projects, professors open to collabs with the students.

It has not disappointed us in any way. Job market is tough for graduating CS majors everywhere right now, even Stanford.

That said, I wouldn't throw the REA ticket away on Stanford. Unless your kid is an athlete or something special, chances are so so so low he will get in.

Our valedictorian was insanely qualified (including a perfect score on AP CS - only something like 300 students a year do this), applied REA, and was deferred and then rejected. Also an unhooked full pay white guy. So, I would really think about whether your child wants to do this, as if you REA at Stanford you can't ED anywhere else.

Not laid back especially for CS

The odds are blisteringly low, and more do for men in CS.

The laid back CA culture does not really exist at Stanford. Kids work really hard but try to put on a facade to mask their competitiveness. In reality it is no different from east coast elite schools.
