Mcps will not care and still give your child a chrome book. There is no reason k-4th need to use them daily. We opted out of websites and teachers ignored it and registered our child away using their name and other personal information which we then found on the dark web.

Untrue at least at DD's school. The teachers refuse to print assignments or modify them for paper. It's a mess and I'm sorry you are going through this OP. MCPS has been a disaster for DD since they started giving out Chromebooks.

Have your kid show up without one or a dead battery and see what happens.

Right, but the problem is not taking them home. Most kids in MCPS are not taking them home. The issue is that the kids are on them for a good part of the day, everyday. My DD's art teacher had them learning to draw some things from a youtube channel. And my DD was annoyed because she realized there was a drawing she did this year from the channel that a different art teacher had them do last year. My DD does math games, reading, some standardized tests, etc on Chromebooks.

Fellow teacher here. I hate the chromebooks. Keep in mind that I am in a nearby county.. but I don’t use them except for state testing. Yes, students are trained on how to navigate the sites before hand to prepare for the test. Other than that, they use pencil and paper. Their chromebooks do not even go home. You’ll want a private school or to homeschool.

There are standardized tests that must be administered via the Chromebook.

I work in an elementary school (across all grades) and they are on chromebooks a good portion of the time they're in classrooms. They also use them for the standardized tests. I highly doubt you'll be able to do this. I would look into private schools.

Chromebook’s are the bane of my existence. Just came to commiserate. If someone can please explain to me why my 7 and 10 year olds *need* their own computer that I have no control over (unless I take it away, which I do), I would be appreciative. They don’t use them for homework assignments, they’re heavy and they spend all day looking at a screen….

Unfortunately so much of what they do is on the Chromebook, especially when the teacher needs to pull the kids out for testing (Dibels, etc).. How old is your DS? Maybe he will behave better at school when told to get off the screen if his friends are also complying.

If your son exhibits those problems in school, they'll likely be interested in accommodating.

Convenience for the school is very important.

Our son has behavior issues associated with screen time. It’s like jekyl and Hyde with him- becomes a terror whenever he is near a screen and is told to get off it. We are working in treatment options etc.

But wanted to know if anyone has been able to opt out of chromebooks in MCPS?

Could this be something included in a 504 plan?
