It's very hard to get a good price selling a car on your own. Most people that can pay cash for a car want too big of a discount to make it worthwhile.
I won't to private party sales because it's too risky. Much easier for me to go to a dealership and haggle. If the car is effed up I have way more recouse with a dealership than a private sale.

OP. I sold it to Carmax. Offer was way better than that of traditional dealerships, Vroom, or Carvana.

Are you prepared to give strangers test drives in your car? Take it to their mechanics, answer a bunch of texts and emails that end up in nothing or ridiculous low ball offers? Then post it on Facebook market place and maybe Craigslist in case someone still looking there. You might get $500 more than selling it to Carmax.

Craigslist and Autotrader. Prepare for a heap of fraud from Craigslist. Fake cashier's checks. Fraudulent wires, etc.

The only way I'd accept payment is if we walked into the bank, and I see the bank issuing a cashier's check or wire to me directly.

For those who have sold a car to a private party, have you been able to get the private-party amount listed on sites like Edmunds? Also, how long did it take you to sell the car, and was it worth your time and effort. I've got a Volvo XC60 that I want to sell, and I'm trying to decide if I should just trade it in or sell it myself. If anyone has a recommendation on where best to list the car, that would be great too.
