Read up on Schluter KERDI, Redgard, etc. Ask the contractors what methods they use; if they don't have a clear answer or talk about tiling over sheetrock, move on. A cheap install that has to be ripped out is an expensive install.

Any contractor using Kerdi or other similar systems is going to charge more than $20k for a bathroom. The people charging less than that are handymen who call backer board with nothing over it "waterproofing".

Yeah, I just paid $9k ($11k including new frameless door) to tear out and replace a 3'x5' shower only.

I'm the OP of a different thread and being quoted ~$15k just to re-do my shower with no fancy upgrades!

what size is the bathroom? Depending on the size I think you may be able to get it done for under $20,000.

We received three estimates recently ranging from $27 - $44K for a similar situation.

Same time and cost for me this past March. Downcounty MoCo.

I don’t think $15k is likely, but it depends on the age of the bathroom (because of the likelihood of a mortar bed under the tile) and your willingness to find and manage cheaper labor.

We are doing this but with 1 sink and higher end materials/fixtures. $28k.

Does anyone have recent experience with a small bathroom renovation cost and timeline? We need to renovate an upstairs hall bathroom that's shared by two boys - tub/shower, two sinks, toilet. We are not looking for anything fancy, but there are a few issues with the old fixtures and we will need to upgrade eventually, and i'm wondering if it's better to do it now vs. buying new fixtures and not addressing the floor, cabinets, etc. Is it possible to replace tub/shower, install two sinks and vanities, new tile floor, new toilet for $15k?
