Just want to say that this has not been my experience with the 4th grade VA History test (when it was administered as a traditional SOL) or the 5th grade science test. Scores have always been strong.

I take the SOLs as a sign that my child has basic competency in the subject. I would not bother with re-takes, but would absolutely spend time reviewing the material over the summer and making sure there are no gaps.

Just as an FYI, the next science SOL is in 8th grade, and covers 6-8th grade material.

DP. Well, something went wrong somewhere. It's a notoriously hard test because it covers two years - but kids certainly manage to score pass advance on it. What happened for OP's DC?

It only matters for the school if your kid retakes it. It somewhat affects your property values since SOL is how great schools rates schools. It doesn't matter to your kid if they retake or not. FWIW. I didn't even realize my 5th grader was taking a science SOL. But I just checked and I guess mine takes it this Thursday.

They did not pass by 1 question. It really means nothing and it isn’t going to hold your child back from ANYTHING! If it’s going to stress your kid out to retake it then forget it. If your kid is fine with trying again, then go for it. Seems like it could have been a test error, teacher not reviewing enough, off day for your child etc… Since they typically do well. No need to worry.

Failed the 5th grade science one. Score was 398? School is asking if we want a retake. Pros/cons?
