There's a lot of friendship 'churn' freshman year, partly because there are two MS feeders and one of the middle schools has split articulation, so friendships are disrupted.

If he likes sports, consider trying out for a fall sport because that is an easy way to find companions. Tryouts begin, I think, August 9? (If not the 9th, then that week...so earlier than you might expect.)

There are tons of clubs to sign up for, but that won't happen for a few weeks and honestly, most of the clubs are really superficial, so don't count on that as a way to make friends unless he joins one of the few clubs with a lot of meetings.

That's because IB level is considered a high level course just like AP. A lot of magnet kids self study for AP exams. They take both the AP and IB exams.

If you combine AP/IB, Churchill is pretty lower, even compared to Wootton which doesn't have any IB classes.

My kid goes Churchill he won’t be a new kid that much. Both Herbert Hoover and Cabin John MS feed in.

Since you're familiar with Churchill, let me ask: how tough do you think it will be for a new freshman boy? My son is a typical kid. Likes sports, likes video games, is smart and has a couple academic interests, will live within walking distance which I hope will be a nice thing for friendships. He is resilient and happy to make new friends and doesn't seem anxious but has the self awareness to realize he will probably be nervous once school starts. I don't want him to be lonely as a new kid.

There is no need at Churchill.

Apply to magnet programs, or your DC can take tons of AP classes at Churchill. That's pretty much it.

Yeah Churchill has no special programs. There is no specialized track or anything like that.

Students at Churchill can apply to countywide magnets like all MCPS students.
