You don’t want a child hater to serve as a sub. Even if you’re called for jury duty you can get weeded out for being crazy before having to actually serve. Who is weeding out crazy potential subs who hate kids or would duct tape them to chairs to make them sit still?

Instead, PAY SCHOOL STAFF MORE. Then you’ll have more candidates, higher quality applicants, and happier staff who aren’t stressed about making rent. It’s not that hard to figure out.

Nope, they need to pay subs more and work on kids' behavior. I don't think jury duty should be forced either.

I think you’d get the entire general public advocating for school choice vouchers within a couple months and it would be the end of public schooling as we know it.

Remember how it worked out the last time we forced parents to realize how the sausage is made? 20% or whatever it was pulled their kids out of the school.

Public schools are zoos now. This might be the catalyst we need to finally fix a broken system.

Can you imagine suggesting this in any other field? "Oh hey, your public defender today is ... [draws name] Sam. He's an accountant. Good luck!"

Lots of subs are already "untrained randos" so it might not be much worse than the current situation although possibly a pedophile magnet type of position.

No, this is a terrible idea. Teaching is skilled work and requires training in how to interact with kids appropriately, how to manage a classroom, etc. I don't want some untrained rando in a position of authority over my kid, saying who-knows-what to her -- nor would most untrained adults get through a day in a classroom of kids who knew that adult had no clue. Not everybody is cut out to be a teacher.

I do think mandatory public service is an interesting idea, and the types of service could include teaching. Maybe everyone could do two years of service at age 18 and then some recurring period of service every 5 or 10 years thereafter, with your regular job protected like for military reservists. But in that case people would specialize and train.

I think parents should be required to sub a couple times before criticizing teachers.

But yeah, you do not want people forced into caring for your kids. It’s hard enough for the people who chose it.

I already have issue with some of the teachers my kids are exposed to because of their viewpoints on race, politics, fashion, ethics, sexist ideas, lifestyle habits (diets, exercise, work load), I don't need them to hear from yet another random person and their hang ups.

What do you think about requiring the general public to perform Substitute Duty a few days a year, like Jury Duty, to help with the massive sub shortage and strain on teachers? At the very least, it pays more than the $30 you get from Jury Duty.

Obviously if you're already a teacher or school staff, you're exempt. Some people can be exempt depending on circumstances, like Jury Duty.
