There are so many camps. What are you looking for specifically?

I would like to hear which camps these are and what kids and parents think of them?

Mine started at age 8 for a week. Then 2 weeks for the next few years. After that was a month.

Mine is going for the first time this summer. It’s one week and she’s 11. I would not have sent her before this, and I wouldn’t send her to a big camp. Not a good fit for her personality. This one is small.

My DD went at 8 for 3 weeks and my DS went at 10 for 3 weeks. My son wanted to go at 9 but with the pandemic it didn’t work out. Now they both do 7 weeks. They LOVE it, but definitely not for every kid

My 10 year old DS is going to sleep away camp in the Poconos for a week this summer. If he likes it, he can go for 2 weeks next summer. He wasn’t ready before this year. We know a lot of kids that went to camp for 3 weeks the summer after 2nd grade. I have a daughter that age and there is no chance she is ready. She has at least another year before I would consider it.

Sent 7 year old last year to trial short 5 nights overnight. Did fine. This summer at 8, will be going to 2 week overnight.

My parents allowed to go after fourth grade when I was 10. I opted to go a year later after fifth grade. But that was for 8 weeks, and many kids don’t go for the full summer anymore.

My kids aren’t old enough for sleepaway camp yet, but my sisters kids started going for a month after third/fourth grade at ages 9/10. By those ages many of their friends weren’t home for the summer.

Both my kids started the summer before 4th grade and have always gone for a month.

Mine did not head off until 12 or 13 (one started 6th grade, one 5th grade). The first wasn't interested and when he finally was the second was upset we hadn't sent them earlier. Overall, they could have gone earlier and we probably should have sent them earlier; but, we were able to find a camp they love with room in the older years. (This is out of state and old fashioned swim in the river, do crafts, ride horses, no A/C camp. The first year they went 2 weeks, after that a month.)

We did it at 10, and it was a little bit late. Most kids start at 8, and start cementing those friendships. My husband didn't want the kids to go at all, and it took me time to convince him how good it was for the kids, for their confidence, leadership, etc

At what age did you start sending your kids to overnight camp? Which camps are most popular with kids from the DMV?
