Mopeds do not belong on public roads. They are incapable of keeping up with traffic, and offer no safety features which larger motorcycles may have such as ABS and traction control. Inexperienced riders are especially at risk; renting a moped abroad without significant prior experience with one would be extremely foolish. Further, the rental agency may provide you with a helmet of unknown protective value, but you'll almost certainly have no other protective gear. Competent motorcyclists know to wear All The Gear All the Time (ATGATT), including a full-face helmet certified by DOT or the European equivalent, armored and abrasion-resistant clothing fully covering arms and legs, crush resistant boots, and purpose-specific protective gloves. Virtually no moped riders wear effective protective clothing, greatly increasing the probability of severe or fatal injuries in the event of even a low-speed accident.

If you want to ride mopeds on public streets, do it in Bermuda, where they are relatively common and traffic speeds are low.

Do not do it. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in Europe in general, and things are even more dangerous for moped drivers/riders. ATVs are even worse. Google something like "tourists moped accident Greece" if you want ample proof.

Greece? you'll need to be more specific. But almost certainly my answer would still be no unless on a tiny island maybe.

Get a car! My husband really wanted to get a quad bike (ATV) for tooling around the islands, but I read about all the injuries that inexperienced drivers sustained, and noped out of that quickly. Plus it's pretty hot and dusty in Greece, you will appreciate the AC or at the very least protection from the sun (not all cars in Greece have AC). Mopeds and quad bikes are fine if you're 24 (I guess), but not if you're over 35.

Do not get a moped-- I would really fear for your life driving a moped for the first time in a foreign country in any kind of traffic situation.

I'm trying to decide if we should rent a moped or a car in Greece. We've never driven mopeds before and quite honestly, it makes me uncomfortable (but DH is really wanting to do this). Any recommendations here?
