Pretty much this. WhatsApp is essentially a text messaging platform like gchat/messages that is platform and region independent. I use it for international friends and various group chats. I only ever communicate with people I know and get less spam there than my regular phone/text messaging apps.

Whatsapp isn't based on your phone but is internet based, so you can use it anytime you have access to the internet. Which means you can use it while traveling without running up roaming charges.

My family and I use WhatsApp for communication while one is in Europe and one is here. This avoids the roaming charges from Verizon.

It's main advantage from when it was launched is that the messaging is encrypted, so the content of the messages is secure regardless of whether someone can track your phone or not.
You don't have to disclose location and no regular person should be able to track you if you are using what's app. Of course, it asks to access your contacts, which you can limit.
It's not like social media though, where you have a profile that can be shared. You can keep your contacts very limited.

I've been asked to download WhatsApp. Not sure why it's better than regular text/phone communication?
If you use it or are familiar with it, what are the pros and cons? Any security issues? Do I need to disclose location? I'm leery about security/location because I had problems with a stalker in the past.
