Only consequence is to your home value when great schools is largely based off of SOL. And future test prep practice.

I am not a huge fan of the SOLs and I really dislike the iReadys and the VGA. They all seem like time sucks that offer little to nothing beneficial to my kid. That said, they are good practice for taking tests for high school and the SATs later on.

My main complaint is that there are too many tests that take up too much time. Opting out isn’t all that productive because the kid still misses out on time learning in the classroom since they go to a different room and read. And not enough parents opt out to send a message to the County and the State. My other complaint is that they give these tests and then they take forever to give you results and when you try to set an appointment to discuss a kids performance on them the school says the score doesn’t matter for x,y, and z reason so don’t worry about it.

The entire thing is a time wasting effort with little to no value that causes some kids a good amount of stress.

I teach 5th level 4.

I would have my kid take them unless I was concerned about damaging their mental health due to anxiety or something like that. (If that is the case— absolutely opt out.) It gives a good picture of how well your child is mastering the content as a whole, which the standards-based grades don’t do.

If your child isn’t getting pass advanced in 3rd and 4th with the grade level material, it’s going to be tough to achieve a pass advanced with the above grade level material in 5th and 6th. If you’re aiming for algebra in 7th, you need to have that info.

Do you want to punish the school by withholding pass advance scores from their metrics? Is it that bad?

I think so. But I don’t know why you wouldn’t want them to have the practice.

4th: 2nd ½ of 4th, 5th grade math

What's the math SOL sequence for level 4 kids? I read somewhere that they skip math 3 sol and elsewhere that they skip math 6 SOL.

As a side question, is math 7 SOL the only one that matters? And it only matters for purposes of middle school math placement? That is, DC can skip all the other math SOLs ?
