You can’t be a mechanical engineer with a 1280 sat unless your math sat is 680+. Better to be 730+

BTW, lots of students think they want to do engineering but then find out they don't. There is something called information systems that is the business side of science (computer science though) and it's a good alternate to engineering if it does not work out.

VA Tech engineering is a reach, not a safety, for a student with these numbers. Plus it is a very large school.

I went to UMD and completely avoided the party scene. Hung out with fellow engineers, joined the women in engineering group etc. In a big school there are many many paths to success as well.

VA Tech engineering is extremely difficult to get into. Not a safety for even high stat students.

I'd add University of Dayton (Marianist, not Jesuit.) It has engineering and a great community. There are direct flights to Dayton via DCA (American airlines) and IAD (United airlines.)

Yes, this has definitely crossed her mind. She's really still figuring things out but realizes she's on a clock.

Stevens is cool! I think it's a bit underrated. Nice location and excellent internship opportunities in NYC and north Jersey.

WPI is test blind and great smaller engineering school.

Look at the jesuit universities if they have your DD desired engineering major (Marquette, Creighton, Xavier, seton hall), Gonzaga, etc. Most have the basic engineerings and are a great place for a kid wanting that smaller, nurturing environment.

There is no way RPI is a safety for someone with those numbers. In fact, RPI is a reach. 1360-1520 is the 25/75 SAT and the average incoming GPA is a 3.9+

DD has been at small private (independent) schools since pre-k (in the DMV and elsewhere now). Not the top school, but fairly rigorous. 1280 SAT and 3.5 uw GPA. She's aiming for engineering. Problem is, all the safety schools seem...large. She's pretty serious, studious, and not looking for a large school with a party scene where she'd get lost, which rules out of most of the typical flagships. On the other hand, the smaller engineering schools are probably reaches for her stats. Ideas for her? We're thinking possibly Rose-Hulman but are stumped otherwise.
