I love April at the salon Bisoux in Delray neighborhood of Alexandria. She corrected a terrible job I had done to me trying to go from bleached blonde back to my natural brown. I showed up to her with a murky yeloowish prurple color and in tears. She was able to get me back to a beautiful rich brown in one two hour visit and does beautiful baylage and color.

Stop being cheap and get yourself to a real salon. Ask them to either do a single process/one color all over and then keep going back every 4 weeks so they can start blending in highlights and eventually get you back to gray.

NP and really any mid to upper scale salon will have an expert colorist who can help. Avoid a training academy/cosmetology school or a Hair Cuttery place.

Have a consultation with an expert colorist and figure out a plan together. Consider also a trim and or new style. You may need deep conditioning treatment at home and in the salon.

You may need highlights and lowlights and or semi or demo color added. I think you’ll find that going darker will be the solution.
Plus time. Oh, and money.

53 and have professionally colored/highlighted/bleached/dyed my hair

Can you book an appointment with a solid, lead colorist? I don't know that salon you mentioned.

You may also need toner.

Brown dyed hair turns brassy, orangish (It's what I have) so I must tone it periodically - more than just using a purple shampoo. However, toning also darkens.

I would be afraid to attempt anything on my own though with multiple dye attempts and potentially fragile hair. Demi permanent would be better l/gentler though it will fade within 5-6 weeks. Demi also sucks into previously dyed hair so you have to be careful with color (have had a few colorists give me nearly black hair because of this when I was going for medium golden brown)

I go back to suggesting you see a solid, well experienced colorist at a good salon. NOT the entry colorist at a good salon, but their #1 lead person and talk through exactly everything that has been done with your hair.

I was asked twice last year if I was my kids’ grandmother, so I bought a box of blonde L’Oreal color and tried to dye my hair. It turned orange. You wonderful people recommended some place that I can’t remember Maddison Rae? Anyway, they tried dying it brown, but that didn’t work.

I had blonde hair as a kid.

Now, my hair has grown out maybe 5 inches. The color difference is noticeable and embarrassing. What can I do? Dye it some less-blonde color and hope it’s similar enough?

I feel like the ugliest person ever.
