This is correct. That said, they may tell you they won't hold the spot. You can also ask the other teams to let you know asap - and again, if they really want your player, they will offer the spot early. It'a game of chicken sometimes.

And now you also know why there's a tryout arms race to see who can hold theirs the earliest.
