This. That’s why it’s a big deal when people get arrested for nonviolent offenses, arrested for things they didn’t do, or stuck in jail because they can’t afford bail. For someone living paycheck to paycheck, the sudden unplanned missed work will likely also mean losing their job, which compounds the problem. And if the arrest happened while driving, if their car is impounded, they may never be able to afford to get it back. So now we’re talking about loss of possessions, job loss, loss of transportation, credit problems, potential loss of housing… It can be ruinous. And it’s not always easy to get a replacement job when you lose your previous job because you were in jail, even if you shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place.
