If you want an all inclusive resort to just sit around and relax then stick to the one you posted. We liked Tulum because we didn’t want a big resort and prefer to get out and explore. Tulum is great for their small boutique hotels. We were directly in the beach and could hear the waves from or room. We also enjoyed getting out- biked to the ruins, billed to town, hired a driver to take us to a bunch of cenotes. Sitting but the pool all day isn’t out vacation style.

The seaweed in the summer in Tulum is ridiculous and smelly.

If you want to relax, you need to be very selective about where you stay in Tulum. Our hotel was lovely, but next to a dance club that played music until 4 am. Every. night. Also, the food prices in Tulum are high - we had just come from Mexico City where the food was amazing and affordable, and we were back to spending $13 for a basic quesadilla. The ruins were great, and the main reason we stayed in Tulum, but the high prices and difficulty walking along the beach road without a sidewalk and a bunch of cars was pretty stressful. I had a much more relaxing vacation when we did an all-inclusive in Jamaica the year prior.

IME DR is cheaper (or nicer for the same budget), and less sargassum (but everyone says this year may be a crazy year?).

The advantage Mexico has is being able to visit the Mayan sites of Tulum, Chichen Itza etc.

Haven't been to Tulum since the pandemic but it kind of got overrun/overdeveloped-- traffic jams etc. (although we did have some nice meals too).

Take a look at the Excellence collection of resorts. If you're willing to consider Cancun (which also has direct flights from IAD), Excellence Playa Mujeres is wonderful.

30/32 married couple looking to spend 7 nights relaxing at a quiet beachfront resort in late July to early August. Budget is ~$5k for lodging. We've narrowed it down to DR and Tulum as they both have direct flights from DCA/IAD.

Primary priority is peace and quiet and a nice beach. Medium priorities are that the food is good (by all-inclusive standards), and lesser priorities are potential for day trips.

It looks like most of the Tulum resorts are not all-inclusive but there are food options in the city center, which we are open to.
