It is really hard to make most FCYBL teams! The small size of basketball rosters and the limits with the zip codes means kids only have so many options. There were 70+ boys at the CYA tryouts we went to, for two teams.

Its better than AAU in a lot of wa
ys because the league is very organized with a regular season, a tournametn, MVPS etc, very inexpensive, most of your games are very even because they have divisions, referees always show, and you play in nice gyms.

How do you think any of those teams would do against Durant or Takeover or New Word? Stars are at least eybl, but the cavs and nova94 are not great clubs

Are you saying there are only two categories of talent: Durant level and "all star rec"? GMAFB.

All star rec is literally what county is. It's a club based on a small geographical footprint fielding the best kids they can find in that area plus two additional kids. Regional teams, i.e. team Durant, are going to be much better than the kids you find at FCYBL tryouts. The bigger clubs like Durant and Takeover all have kids in nova playing for them, they just aren't playing FCYBL

Not sure what age you're talking about, but high schoolers typically do this to keep skills up in the off season if they are not playing another sport. Lots of weekend tournaments.

Nova 94 is a very strong club in our age group. Cavs are pretty strong in more of the older age groups, as well.

Yeah, "all star rec" is pretty much completely inaccurate.

AAU in this area ranges from glorified rec to kids who will end up playing professionally. Some clubs are year round, others aren't, but the main season is spring and early summer. In Virginia, there is also county basketball in the fall from 5th though 8th grade which is like all star rec. There is also CYO though churches which is above rec and below travel. I said depends and usually a lot because basketball is the least organized of any sport. Teams play in random tournaments every weekend and there are no real leagues

Regarding "all star rec" are you referring to FCYBL (Fairfax County Youth Basketball League)? Many Division 1 & 2 FCYBL teams are comprised of kids who play on AAU teams in spring season, usually for the larger AAU orgs--Fairfax Stars, NoVA94, NoVA Cavs. Many of the FCYBL teams are very competitive and hard to make. For example, in Arlington last year over 100 boys showed up to try out for 2 teams, 10 on each roster. Several of the better FCYBL teams (Vienna, McLean) are already stacked with AAU players (2 zipcode exceptions be dammed) so especially hard for an unknown to make those teams unless they're big men.

This is about the best explanation that you can have on AAU. One other caveat on AAU, there is AAU where there are "open" tryouts that play on the AAU circuit where the AAU programs have websites and IG pages, then there is the super high level ones that are invite only tryouts that are handed out to only the very top end of the talent level. those teams basically travel the country.

Some are excellent for developing players and exposing them to more serious basketball. Travel can also mean playing on the "select" team of your county in the winter and in the summer. but you're only traveling within a specified area--not necessarily out of state like you will with AAU.

And those kids typically also play on an AAU team.

Can someone give a brief explanation of youth basketball? Is AAU THE league to play in if someone does travel level basketball?

When does travel basketball start? Is it year round too?
