Yikes. That suggests weak admin. How are they?

Are you kidding? Weed is a problem at EVERY MCPS high school. My kids attend another high school and the bathrooms constantly smell like weed and my kid has commented that there are always kids smoking in there.

And vaping, which is an issue at middle schools and high schools.

Our high school is piloting a program where they will install vape detectors in the bathrooms. But admin has not said what happens when a kid is actually caught vaping!

I don’t really blame admin because there is not really support for punishing kids who smoke weed or vape IN schools. MCPS has a major issue with allowing drugs in our middle and high schools. It’s ubiquitous though, and not unique to Sherwood.

OP, have you tried a COSA for Blake? I would try that before paying for private. Same problems in private school just on a different scale.

Blake has more violent incidents than Sherwood. Everyone raves about Blake compared to PB and Springbrook but it’s not a better school it’s just more white than the other 2. Lots of fights this year.

I wouldn’t know because people aren’t posting links to the videos of the fights on here. I only see the PB videos posted.

What is the actual suspension data for the NEC schools?

I am a current parent and agree that the middle schools are much stronger. It’s true there are drugs and vaping is a big issue but not anymore and I think it’s less than what there is happening in other schools. In terms of violence, I have not heard of any. I have several teacher friends at the school and they say it’s a welcoming and pretty inclusive environment. OK so if you’re comparing it to a middle school, it is weaker. But I am happy with the teachers, with the curriculum and my son likes it and is having a good experience at the school.

We are minorities and we have never had any issues with race or racism.

Or lax and uninvolved parenting

Potentially. The parents may not be aware of what their kids are involved in at school. If schools disciplined and alerted parents to this behavior, then they would know.

Not saying that is or isn't the case here, just saying, kids do a lot of things outside of the watchful eye of their parents, and we as parents rely on schools to alert us to what goes on when they're under their care and not ours. Hence, why schools have in loco parentis status.

Got it.

I'm more aware of the drugs, violence, distraction issue in DCC high schools. I thought Sherwood was better in comparison to DCC, but you'll have to hear from actual Sherwood parents if that assumption is true or not.

What are you concerns based on what you've heard? I imagine if you say you're debating about whether to go private, it's cause he's in public for middle in MCPS? So surely you've heard things or talked with other parents?

DS will enter in a year. I'm debating about whether to go private or have him matriculate. I wanted to get current parents perspectives on their experiences?
