There's no single metric, so there's no simple answer to that question. But the 100/8000 number is suboptimal for a lot of reasons, not least because all 8000 are not applying.
I have an 8th grader in of the magnet and know a handful of the kids admitted to RM. I'd say the thing they have in common is being "well balanced" between math and ELA and likely having pretty strong essays.
This makes sense to me. I have two kids, both with excellent grades. One didn’t get in a few years ago and the other one just got in for this coming fall. She is a very strong writer so I think that definitely made a difference.
