I like data. By yourself a Sense energy monitor (Sense.com). It will tell you where all that electricity is going every month based on actual electricity use in your home.

What have been your electric and gas bills the last two months if you're in the dc area and you're in the same-ish size house? We have gas heating, stove, and water, and everything else electric. TIA!

If you just moved in make sure the bills you're looking at cover ~30 days. Our first electric bill after we moved in was ~45 days due to the timing of closing, migrating accounts, etc.

I'm in Virginia with Dominion Energy and they also assessed us a $298 security deposit when we opened our account. They added $99, $99, and $100 to our first three bills and then after 12 months they applied this deposit (with some accrued interest) towards our bills.

But to answer your question, we live in a ~2,800sf 100 year old house without insulation and our last three bills (March, April, May due dates so probably Feb/Mar/Apr usage) were:

Washington Gas: $175, $125, $75
Dominion Energy: $128, $129, $117

We have generally kept off heat and AC so far this spring.

Is your cooking gas or electric?

I paid $80, $53 for gas bill due April, May

And $130, $140 for electric.

We have a 5000 sqft house. We put solar panels on our roof, so our electricity bill is $7 dollar per month as the minimum dominion energy service charge. We even charge an EV and heat pump, plus floor heating for master bathroom.

Electricity is more expensive than gas. Our AC bills are always higher than the gas bill, but it’s been quite cool so far.

I have a 2600 sq ft 1960s house and my energy bill last month was $150 and my gas bill was $70.

We keep the air at 70 (68 at night) and heat at 68 (65 at night). Not surprisingly the past month of April we had to use both air and heat.

I'm surprised that your electric bill changed that much if nothing else changed, especially during the spring when you're not running AC very much. (or maybe you WERE running AC a lot over the past month and that is what caused your higher bill....in which case your summer electric bills are going to be awful)

They weren't requested input on how much square footage they need based on their family size.

5000 square ft may or may not feel "enormous" based on your own particular set of circumstances.

Also what appliances do you have for each fuel source?

AC is typically the big draw in electricity but it's been mostly cool - how much did you run the AC during this period?

We just bought a newer 5000+ sq ft house after living in a drafty 2500 sqf 1950s house. Surprisingly the gas bills have been cheaper in the new house ($55 vs $68 last bill) but the electric is way higher in the new house than the old house ($250 vs $25 last bill).
