Expensive private colleges & a couple state schools (instate too, such as W&M) are expensive.

The rest are relatively reasonably priced. Also in DCUMland the 4-year, residential college experience without kid having to contribute anything or take out loans is considered a rite of passage.

I live in DC, so I realize I consciously chose to live in a location without good in state options. That said, as exemplified here, even solid state options can be pricey. Our lowest cost option (Pitt with 5K/year merit plus DCTAG (10K/year towards out of state tuition)) would have been 35K/year. That is not bad in my mind but it is still $140K over 4 years, which is a lot of money.

the prices goes up faster than inflation. I didn't realize that, either. Some schools are closer to $100K/yr. That is insane.

Cost of attendance = tuition + room + board after scholarship and/or FA is applied.

Your figure is just tuition.

Your DC must either be getting financial aid or some type of merit aid. My DS is going to W&M and we're full pay, in state - $40,000.

Does the $28k include food and lodging? Merit aid or need-based?
