Then you get them into therapy to figure stuff out, and if they refuse to go, you give them 1 months notice to move out. As long as they are working towards actually figuring stuff out and having a plan for life, I wouldn't charge or would only charge minimal and give it back to them. Really depends upon the kid and how motivated they are. But I would never keep any of the money---it would only be a tool/motivator for a lazy kid.

As long as they are respectful and contribute to the chores/upkeep of the home, consider allowing them to save money for their future.

Why would you charge your kid rent?

Assuming your are living in the same home as when they went to college, you didn't charge them in HS, so why now? As long as they are working, responsible and respectful (letting you know when they will be home, if they are not home for the night, etc.) and not blowing thru all the money on a spending spree/drinking spree, I will let my kids live at home for free.
Let them save $$$ so they can perhaps buy something sooner....

You charge rent if your kid is an absolute sh*thead who dropped out of college, is a PITA to live with & refuses to get a full time job.

If my parents charged me rent, I would never forget that!

OP, ignore whatever Dave Ramsey told you. All his kids are on his payroll & have been for years doing bullsh*t jobs.

Would you charge your elderly parents rent if they needed to live with you? Jeez. If you charge your kids rent, I hope they remember that someday when you need help.

As long as my child is pleasant in the household, self-supporting & cleans up after themselves, they can live at home forever.

God no. I love my kids, and I'm not poor.

No, let them save for security deposits, furniture, etc., unless you need the money for food or medicine.

Do you need money? We don't charge our kids.

I can’t imagine not charging rent (my kid has a decent job l8ned up) but my husband doesn’t want our kid to rush into an apartment lease. So I don’t know.
