This year the coaches don’t seem as prepared as they should . They are repeating placements that have yielded 0 wins.
As far as I can tell this is their first time coaching and I’m not sure how much kid time they’ve had beyond being kids. So all feedback is negative and discussion of improvements. We are not interested in participation accolades but the kids can’t be all wrong every single game. These are kids that have played on winning teams previously. Only constant on the failures I see is the coaches.
I know not to say anything and just go cheer. But it’s hard to encourage my kid when the heads are dufus.

And no we just tell our kid to work harder and show that he can play other roles. Personally, I know it won’t matter. But what else can I do.

What age and what sport - makes a difference.

I do think you should step up and volunteer to coach next season.

My kid plays rec soccer. We’ve had awful coaches and good coaches. This year we joined OBGC and I think the coaches are great. It’s a bit more than we paid previously but I’m ok with it. The coaches are volunteers and I appreciate them.

My kid had two guys coaching his baseball team when he was 8, they were young guys and it soon became apparent that they knew almost nothing about how to coach baseball.

However, they weren't a'holes. They were nice guys who treated the kids well. The team never won a game all year but my kid had a lot of fun because he got to play positions he wanted to try and the coaches were enthusiastic and positive.

Your beef should be that the coaches are treating the kids badly. Either tell them directly or tell the league officers or both. Go to all practices and games and don't permit them to talk to your kid or any kid negatively. Help them coach if they'll let you, show them how it works. Most rec coaches are volunteers and they get frustrated if they don't get proper training, guidance and help.

Winning is not that important but treating the kids well is absolutely critical.

So I’ve only discussed this here and privately at home. As far as kid knows kid needs to play better.

That the coaches suck and appear to be aholes is not anything I would ever share beyond this anonymous board.
And no I did not include information about them being aholes. It just so happens they suck and are also aholes.

Rec sports sucks, OP, because the coaches are volunteers. It is what it is. I just want my kid to be active.

Is this a club sport where teams are placed into leagues based on performance? If so, teams often fluctuate on how many games they win year to year. After a winning season, teams are moved up and then they usually are middling to losers. Lose too much, and they get relegated. My kid’s soccer team won everything last year, including 4 tournaments. This season they moved up to the top bracket and now are celebrating ties. They are better than last year even though their record doesn’t seem like it. The bottom of their league last season got relegated and is winning every game by 4-5 goals this season.

I don’t think they usually are but I think they ran short on volunteers and might be getting paid .Can’t be much.
