Practices his instrument, practices baseball skills, etc. Cleans up his room, empties the dishwasher, etc. on less busy days.

If you have a kid that doesn't do extra activities outside of school, the after school clubs are a great option. They have sports, book clubs, dungeons and dragons, writing, study hall, etc. All sorts of things. And if your child stays for both sessions (2:30-3:30, 3:30-4:30) there is a bus that they can take home most days.

He hasn't had one second of homework that he didn't get done at school, but I think some kids do have homework to do as well.

Really? Even math? Mine has math most days at least. Plus I make him read. Sometimes he has to finish up a longer term assignment or study for a quiz or test.

I should qualify this by saying that his teachers give assignments, but he gets them done in class or during advisory period. He's in all honors classes including Algebra and has had straight As all year. He's just a very organized kid and has always worked quickly. I do know that some of his friends at his school have homework and I've heard them talk about studying for tests over their online video game chats, but my son says they go over everything in class and he doesn't need more studying than that. Which his grades bear out. He reads every night before bed.

My DD is similar, in that she usually finishes all her work in school. When she does bring home work, it's usually something that needs clarifications (she has some bad teachers). They don't go over anything in class, usually just give out study guides, so she'll look them over the day before the tests, to make sure she hasn't missed anything. It will probably take her some time to go through everything ahead of math SOLs and finals to make sure she hasn't forgotten stuff from the first part of the year.

Next year, I'm sure she'll have to do more work at home. I'm told that 8th grade Civics class is a 2-3 hours of homework per night class, and since the science SOLs cover materials from 6th - 8th grades, she should spend more time reviewing that stuff.

Mine was all honors and had almost NO homework until this year (10th). My MS kid would come home and sometimes take a nap. Have a snack. Maybe meet up with neighborhood friends. Then home for shower, laying out things for the next morning, and some days had a sport.

Our MS, and I think they all do this, have clubs and sports after school and a late bus most days. But you have to be sure what days those are.

Mine stays at after school activities three days a week and on the other days he comes home and games with his friends.

My MS kid has homework most days. Usually about 30 min-1 hr. Sometimes more if there's a project. She does afterschool clubs usually 2-3 days a week, music lessons 1x week.

Mine comes home and hangs out on her phone but she would prefer to be with her friends. Unfortunately we live across town from her school so it's not easy for them to get together. Sometimes she stays after and takes the bus but not often. The popular clubs at her MS are snapped up really quickly so it's a bit discouraging. These are the years the parents are driving them everywhere!

DD's MS has after school programs that last until 4:45 (3 different blocks). Some kids do that. Mine gets home at 2:45, takes 30 minutes to chill, practices her instrument, does homework or studies for tests (if needed), works out, then goes to her ECs. Depending on the EC and how late it goes, she'll also shower/eat dinner.

Because the days start early, she also lays out her clothes for the following day, packs her bags (different classes on different days), washes up her lunch stuff, etc.

Middle schools have an after school program that your child could participate in. It's free and there's usually a bus most days (but not all). That's an option. Your kid probably wouldn't get home until five or later since the buses come around 430.

My daughter's going in to middle school next year and will just...come home and do chores and her homework.

Her friend who's in middle school now does the same.

Are those programs provided by school?

I have a rising 7th grader who will start his middle school in months. The middle school schedule will be quite different. The school day starts at 7:30 am and ends at 2:15 am? I wonder what the middle schoolers do after class? 2-3 hour long club? Sports at school. Or parents have to arrange commute for middle schoolers to go here and there to fill the 2-3 hours after class?
