If your kid loves school and studying ADHD is fine because they can obsess over their work. If they are talented but not in love, it will need more active management.

Ok, my other kid did that one. Some kids will be very competitive, but there will be plenty collaborative and supportive. He'll just need to look for them. I think collaborative and social support are really important for my adhd kid. Ms. Soriano in counseling is fantastic. Reach out to her if kid's counselor isn't helpful (most are good, but at least 1 is a dud).

Some classes might be a challenge for executive function, but, once he can choose electives, that should be smooth sailing. Also, the teachers are great. He'll need to get comfortable communicating about what he needs with them, but they are largely very kind, knowledgeable and helpful. Also, administrator, Mr. Ostrander, is great and helpful. If your kid is unsure about anything, he can ask Ostrander.

He will do great!!

Which program? Some are more pressure cooker than others. My adhd kid did not apply to RMIB because she thought that would be tough to manage. She chose Wheaton over Blair magnet because she thought the hands-on nature of the mag classes at Wheaton would better engage her. She has done really well there. Great counseling and 504 support. I think Blair might have been more of a challenge in terms of executive function and staying interested in a variety of stem subjects, but Blair also has an excellent counseling resource teacher who can help with getting supports in place.

Your kid has done so much without having supports already. Just make sure he gets a 504 or IEP set up, whatever meds Dr. thinks will be the best fit, and I think he will do great.

If they managed to do well enough to get into the magnet despite these challenges, they should be fine. Believe it or not they're far from alone.
