Honestly, my youngest got a long pole! Can't remember what we gave the oldest boy and DD got a cross necklace.

What my kids remember most is that my parents, who were thrilled to have Catholic grandkids, gave them each a crisp $100 bill for communion. (And confirmation!)

Crucifixes are de rigueur for Catholics and if the child is receiving first communion they certainly are familiar with crucifixes. A crucifix is “gruesome” only from an external, world-centered standpoint. For Catholics, the corpus on the cross is a reminder of Christ’s incomparable act of redemption, and can be a source of strength in our own trials.

Don’t worry about getting a “thing” - instead focus on making your family environment one that supports his faith development. Teach him by example how to develop a personal faith life. THAT’S the greatest gift you can give him.

An age-appropriate religious book would be nice (e.g. a good Children's Bible). Or maybe some VeggieTales videos (the older ones, when they were doing Bible stories rather than pop culture), if you don't already have them. Our kids loved those.

Lifelong Catholic here and parents were never the gift-givers. Beyond the private room restaurant shindig.
