I had a Miata many years ago. Great car, nothing ever went wrong on it. I sold it when my oldest got his driver’s license. A Miata is too small for a young, inexperienced driver.
I ended up buying a used Camry with 50k miles on it. Sold it 10+ years later with almost 300k miles on it. Very reliable car but soulless to drive. Perfect for a teenager.


The car isn't for the young, inexperienced driver. The car is for the parents. Hence, my suggestion.

Used Honda Fit. Pre-2012. Those are the ones that came straight from Japan. Fantastic reliability. Fun to drive. 2013-forward they made them in Mexico and the reliability declined.

We found a great Mercury Sable (used, low mileage) at $10K. If you search CarMax and other local dealers for used vehicles, you can find a good sturdy car for $10K or under.

You still want a solid car (not a Miata) that can carry passengers and is a safe drive. Be open and check out all used cars with low mileage.

We desperately need a third car for 3 kids who are working summer jobs. (We're a family of 5 with 2 cars). parents can drive the beater.
