In state vs. out of state is relevant to this discussion. In state can generally have a bit lower GPA.

My DS is a full IB diploma candidate from one of FCPS' lowest performing high schools. He's most likely in the top 5% of his class. Caucasian. His older DS graduated from W&M. He showed interest - did the interview, toured the school, met with admission counselor when they visited his high school. Applied TO during RD. Accepted.

He has

2 B-s (one in Algebra 2 Trig Honors in 10th grade, which was online 3/4 of the year)
1 C+ (IB Chem in 10th grade, which was online 3/4 of the year.)

His weighted GPA is 4.14 - calculated after 11th grade.

5 B/B+ s in 9th and 10th. 1 in 11th. Admitted ED last year, so 12th didn’t count, but 1 in 12th. 11APs Unhooked white female who had a 4.0W at application, 4.1 at graduation. Perfect scores in both verbal ACT sections. Her transcript was interesting— very, very deep and not very wide. Lots of demonstrated interest.

Doubt she would have been admitted RD. She showed WM a lot of love. Apply, ED, demonstrate interest and spend time on the supplemental essay.

Had 2 children admitted to W&M. Boy had 2 Bs, girl had none. Much easier to get into W&M as a male. Generally a smaller applicant pool and they don’t want the female/male ration to get too far apart.

4.3, 1490 SATS, FCPS high school, one B+ in honors chem during virtual year. One A- in Spanish 4. Rest are As, including As in 7 APs.

If you look in Scattergrams and switch to unweighted GPAs, you’ll likely see that most admits have some Bs.

I’ll add the 4.3 is from FCPS non IB, which I think is pretty high before junior grades come out. The Bs were from 10th grade only.

OOS and regular decision: one B in 9th grade AP US Gov, one B in 12th grade AP Calc BC. 4.6 wGPA, 11 APs, half with exam scores of 4 and 5. 35 ACT.

I think the B is less important than for what class it was. We were told not to worry about her grades in AP Calc BC, since she wanted to major in international relations, not STEM, and it's one of the most difficult APs (in retrospect she should have taken AP Stats!). If the overall rigor of the profile is high, then a B here and there won't matter so much.

DCUM also says W&M appreciates demonstrated interest, but we didn't visit or interview before she applied literally the day of the RD deadline. Maybe it matters more if you're in-state and the profile is a bit weak to begin with.

GPA will be over a 4.3 but there is one B and 2 B+.
