I have Shenandoah too. It looks great in winter. Arguably it’s best season. It comes up a little late in Spring, so that is when it will look “worst,” between the time you cut off the old growth and when the new growth gets to height.

I have Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah', but not as a foundation plant. It gets 3-4' tall, tends to retain its shape through winter (granted, we haven't had much snow lately), and steadily increases in clump size. I do absolutely nothing to it, other than a haircut before new growth comes out. It's pretty low maintenance.

I’m trying to decide between I inkberry holly and switchgrass (panicum virgatum) for foundation plantings. Would love to hear about what the switchgrass looked like in winter, how tall it grew, general maintenance tips etc. Also, what you chose to plant in front of it.
