I don't have enough money to destroy the planet. Everyone else put together does. Blame them.

I would add that some of my favorite people on the planet travel more than I ever would. I suspect their habits will evolve over time, if they ever calculate their carbon footprint. It’s also difficult to but a mid-sized house in desirable neighborhoods unless you’re willing to do the renovations yourself. Builders overbuild to make $ and bust people have to choose from what’s available.

1. If you’re at all famous, this will result in terrible press. The more famous you are, the worse the press. If you’ve ever said anything about helping the environment, it will be brought up in perpetuity to illustrate how out of touch you are.

2. What is money for? To pay rent or mortgage. Nobody needs more than 5,000 sq ft unless they have a very large family. I assume you own your house and pay taxes, upkeep, furnishing, and possibly a mortgage.

To buy food. I presume you buy organic, local, grass-feed everything.

To buy clothes. The clothing industry is a top polluter. The future of fashion will involve renting, purchasing redesigned items ( see the coach website for a great example of this), and items that can be worn a variety of different ways ( like those shoe clips in the 80s).

To take care of your health. This might include doctors’ visits, medicine, a gym membership (home gym if you’re very famous), active hobbies, dental care, etc.

To educate and develop your children. In the US this means college. It could also mean buying books, museum memberships, tutors, extracurricular classes and activities, volunteering, toys.

To take care of your family. My parents don’t need a dime from us, but we’re prepared to go to all of their appointments with them when they’re at the end of life. I believe that people should be prepared to take care of their parents, UNLESS the parents were abusive, the relationship is strained, or they simply don’t have the money to do so. My sibling will never have kids, so I’d expect my kids to look after my sibling in their decline. Sibling is very much in the kids’ life and loves them to bits. Again, there are lots of exceptions for crummy parents, distant family you never see, or if younger generation is overwhelmed by other things, such as a special needs child.

For entertainment. Movies, museums, outings, some travel (Most people have one small vacation a year to the local lake.), inviting friends to your house, a TV, a phone, writing letters, books, hobbies you can do in town, etc. Ski vacations you fly to multiple times a year are gauche. We’re not teaching our kids to ski, play golf, surf, or anything they need to travel a long way for. Most people in history has to be content with hobbies they could do within walking or driving distance of their house. I will say that if you live far from family, some flying may be inevitable. But nobody needs to “see” the world. People who travel excessively as a hobby are out of touch. Would I love to see Ireland? Yup. Alaska? Absolutely. Will I ever get to? Nope.

To make the world a better place. We donate a large chunk of our income. I’m sure you do, too.

If, after all that, you still have money to burn, look into a trust that will take care of your kids and grandkids. If, after buying a beautiful house, beautiful clothes, healthcare, education, taking care of family, creating generational wealth, hobbies and moderate travel, you STILL have extra money, then you’re not doing enough good in the world. Full stop. In the end, money is for taking care of yourself, the family and the world.

Have you calculated your CO2 footprint across the last 12 months? I think you should do that, and then compare it against both the US average (about 16 metrics tons per year) and the international average (about 5 metric tons per year).

At least in my case, knowing my CO2 footprint has led to alterations of my behavior. I've cut my footprint by about 40% through a combination of lifestyle adjustments. I don't feel that these adjustments have negatively affected my happiness. I still enjoy life, but I do it without emitting as much CO2.

You already know it’s terrible for the environment. Sounds like you want to do it anyways. “What money is for” just makes you sound been worse. There’s no justifying it, but if you’re going to do it, just do it and stop trying to see if others here will justify it for you.

Is it justified or hypocritical to fly private to attend two events in one day? On one side, its waste of resources but on other side, what money is for?
