Some debate whether ASL considered ‘foreign’

We avoided those.

Yes, we had planned for DC to take summer ASL classes if the HS wouldn’t waive the FL requirement, but they did. We know this limits school selection bc some colleges won’t budge on the HS FL requirement for admission even if the HS waived it, and we’re ok with that. If DC has to take ASL in college that’s what will happen, but it sounds like there may be some that waive FL altogether (or like pp said, offer a non-lang alternative), so that’s what I’m asking about. We’ve found plenty that offer ASL instead, and DC is open to that too.

Adding because I just realized I may not have been clear in my original ask, we’re curious about colleges that waive the FL requirement for graduation, not for admissions.

You can send emails to the learning support offices at the colleges to ask their relevant policies and options for enrolled students.

I was curious, so I looked it up and Juniata will accept certain “global engagement” courses in lieu of a foreign language for graduation. Some majors might require a language. I’ve noticed that at Mason most majors require either a language or calculus, but there’s no overall language requirement. (And Mason isn’t a SLAC, obviously.)

I know this is a year old but on the chance this poster sees this, what college was it that offered a language waiver? We’re starting to look at schools for DC, who has a FL waiver in HS for dyslexia, and it seems like most colleges only allow students to swap ASL for the FL requirement rather than fully waiving it. We’re keeping options open, but would love to know of schools that actually waive the whole requirement.

For what it’s worth, DC currently has a 3.8+ uw gpa and will probably have 3-4 APs, with honors classes in every other class that’s not AP, where available (ie, senior English seminars are not offered as honors).

I'm a DP. Our DC had dyslexia and had the option of taking three courses as replacements for the language requirement. One of them was history of the Roman Empire, or similar. You could inquire whether your school offers similar substitutions.

Thanks, that’s good to know! That kind of substitution wouldn’t have occurred to me.

My child had no foreign language in HS, dyslexic plus ADHD. Has been accepted at all their schools they applied to so far, but no top schools were in the mix due to uneven grades. Will need to take FL in college to graduate at some choices but not all the colleges have that requirement. Applied TO for STEM. One school asked why he didn’t have FL and he replied he had a waiver (no details) but understood he’d need to take it there, and was accepted.

Anyone else have kids who took no foreign language in high school due to dyslexia or other learning disability? PP had two, which is the basic requirement. My kid will have none (but documented learning disability and no foreign language as a recommended accommodation). Would love to hear that it has worked out for kids…

Thanks for sharing. Did they apply test optional?

They did not apply test optional however they had very uneven scores. Their high scores were too high not to show their lower scores. It worked out.

To those with seniors who did not take a foreign language b/c of a language based disability, could you please share names of schools that offered admission, preferably SLACS. Also, did they apply test optional? Many thanks!
