Stay at “best windows” in Venice. The rooms are actually located inside the clock tower building right on Saint Marcos square. Beautiful suites.

We stayed at a convent in Rome. Two big rooms and a great breakfast.

Check Rick Steve’s recommendations for the convent and also his tour group hotel in Venice. We had the huge family room and it was fantastic.

If you are going to do one night and the main island is too out of budget, check out the Hyatt Centric Murano - they have loft family rooms with 2 sofa beds and a king bed. Right on a bus/boat route. And lots of glass factories and restaurants within a 5 min walk.

If only one night, then I would get a place close to the train/bus station, otherwise that's a lot of lugging of baggage. Get in, drop your stuff off, go explore for the day, back to the hotel and crash.

We need one night in August for our family of four, which is proving difficult because a lot of places require two night stays.

In Rome, we stayed at Hotel Smeraldo in their family suite, and it was perfect. Beautiful room, great location, amazing breakfast included with food from the famous bakery across the street, adorable rooftop bar, etc.

The room has one bedroom with a king or queen size bed with ensuite bath and a second small bedroom with ensuite bath with two twin beds.

I had to check the date on this post/thread, because we stayed at the exact same places and I could have written this!

Palazzo Stern - good location on Grand Canal - breakfast on the terrace. Near a vaporetto stop.

In Venice I like Dorsoduro— very convenient/central but a little less touristy than the other side of the Grand Canal (San Marco). Pensione Accademia has some family rooms/jr suites that are pretty nice (not enormous but at least some have outdoor space which is pretty rare in Venice).

Another possibility might to look at staying on the Lido— certainly less central but if you want access to beach/pool might be a good option.

In Rome I think somewhere near the historic center (use Piazza Navona as a proxy) is good in part because it makes walking everywhere easier. I think Hotel Portoguesi has a family room or apartment near there.

A lot of people like to stay in Trastavere because it feels more like a neighborhood but it does put you a bit further from all the sites.

we stayed in the Hilton Stucky Molino in Venice in a family room (one room with master, one room with dining area and pull out sofa.) It was wonderful. Hotel also has rooftop pool with incredible views of Venice and a complimentary water shuttle to St. Mark's square.

Cruising from Rome and returning to Venice in Summer 2024--traveling with kids, so we will need 2 rooms. Not interested in an Air BnB.

Suggestions for fabulous hotels or specific areas?
