I am the OP. My spouse is a middle school math teacher. My oldest is taking Geometry as an 8th grade because he wanted to take Alg 1 in 7th - but I assume even my 5th grader in AAP is "only" going to take Alg 1 in 8th - and I am ok with that. I expect my youngest will take Alg 1 in 8th too and I expect my spouse will make sure she is on track.

I am not even sure what our base school offers in this respect. They did not offer advanced math until 5th grade when my oldest was considering going to the center and since he really likes math - that was a big consideration. Though as I understand it - our base was forced to offer advanced math options in lower grades now.

True but advanced math is no longer the golden ticket into TJ like the good old days. Kids seem to get in at all different levels now.

I wanted my child in Advanced Math because he loves math and he is good at math. TJ is not the reason that most parents are interested in Advanced Math or LIV or LIII. They want a program that challenges their kid.

And for the TJ obsessed, Advanced Math is still important because the vast majority of kids in 7th Grade Honors Math and Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade come out of Advanced Math or LIV.

Most people get in with parent referrals, appeals, and a strong private diagnosis.

I think this is correct and I’m just going to fill out the referral. She is not flagged for level II - it’s her first year in FCPS so wasn’t seen in K or 1 and I didn’t push for an eval this year since I know it doesn’t mean anything at our school. From what I can tell she’s in the highest reading group and her current teacher likes her - she has asked me if I was going to apply for Level IV for her at the conference. So, I would like the have this teacher weigh in on her thoughts for Level III if at all possible.

I think most of the kids who were considered for LIV will be considered for LIII. But Level III and Advanced Math are decided by each school. Normally it is a combo of grades and test scores for third. Fourth grade will use the SOL scores as well.

I don't know if there are criteria, I think they are just referred by the prior year's teacher. I have a 2nd grader and her K and 1st grade teachers both told me they referred her to get Level II services the next year. All this means is that she gets put in a small group where they do slightly more advanced math but it's barely anything.

Would certainly talk to the AART and see if it could be a good fit for your daughter. It seemed to be based on teacher recommendations and test scores, at least in our school.

My daughter had the test scores (about 90-92 percentile in NNAT (123 I think?) and CoGAT (forget the score) and was not placed into it due to a very difficult year in 2nd grade, before her ADHD diagnosis (would hide under tables when overwhelmed etc).

In her IEP meeting at the beginning of 3rd grade to discuss her ADHD (and after she started medication for it), they agreed to let her attend level III and give it a try, and she was formally designated a level III student in 4th grade.

It is different at every school. Email the AART and ask.

Hi - I just wondered - do we know what the criteria is for Level III AAP? I have two older kids in Level IV and I didn’t parent refer my current 2nd grader (just didn’t think it was worth the time with her test scores), and she didn’t test in to the pool. But do you know what the criteria is for Level 3? I just wondered if she would qualify for that. I can email the AART if I have to… thanks!
