How would parents of a rising 9th grader know that tryouts were in July? Most people plan summer trips far in advance.

I had a long post typed out but changed my mind because I worried it gave too many specific details.

But in general, if you haven't experienced high school sports before, be prepared to basically give up your life during the sports season. Maybe that just depends on the school/sport--but that was our experience.

You're lucky you are aware this far out about try out dates. In our experience, many mandatory things were not announced until last minute (like literally hours before) and everyone is expected to just drop everything at a moments notice to be at the coach's beckon call.

+1 for a million reasons. Your Grandpa died? Sorry kid, its the funeral or a chance to play sports at a mediocre HS.

My guess is that attending a funeral would be treated differently from taking a family vacation. In any event, if the sport in question has a freshman team, there is a decent chance you can talk to the coach and work things out. But you will want to take those dates into account for your family trip next summer.

Are you missing the whole week of tryouts or just a day? If just a day, your child could possibly email the coach. Depending on the sport, missing tryouts likely means your child will not be able to play this year.

It's no longer kids rec sports and the expectations at the high school level are more rigorous. Having said that, it may depend on the sport and the coach.

At my kid's APS high school, you can only be manager (but can practice with the team) if you miss tryouts.

Oooh. I don't think that's good OP. Is it a cut sport? The try out dates are the same every year (within a day or two) and pretty well known.
