My mother in law did this for her son, DH’s brother, when he was 9. Supposedly amazing boarding school. But he is not at all close with his mom and dad. Just the obligatory visits and phone calls. I definitely feel sending him away that young for so many years did that.

Why did you have a kid if you just want to ship them off?

Even Hogwarts doesn't start until age 11.

DH attended an English boarding school starting at age 11. Absolutely refused to consider the same for our kids.

What are the reasons you're considering it?

Many of the historic British schools have seen huge declines in boarding students of younger ages. It used to be quite common to start as early as K but now there are only a handful and most aren't starting until age 13 or so.

I know Sedbergh has a Junior school. I wouldn’t send my kids until they were old enough to decide that they wanted to go themselves (probably high school), personally but some kids thrive I guess, especially if their parents are busy 10-12 hours a day or travel a lot.

Look into Wycombe Abbey. They take girls starting at 11, but they need to be very bright.

I have a friend who went to boarding school in the UK but entered at 9th grade. She enjoyed her time there. I would've loved it but alas that was not in the cards for me.

I do think 10 is a bit young, though they do start early there. I'd wait until at least 8th or 9th grade.

You have to put down the child’s name at birth! (This is what I have learnt reading British novels).

But if you have read the novels, you’d also know it is a terrible idea.
