+1 DD was IMO a likely-deny at W&M but did all the interest including a good in-person interview and got waitlisted w/ the Spring start option. She decided to go elsewhere but would not have had the W&M option at all IMO without interest.
+1. My likely deny was admitted ED w/strong demonstrated interest and a good narrative as to why WM was a good fit.

W&M cares a LOT about demonstrated interest. Visit, go to the school visit, and keep an eye on when interview sign-ups open up.
+1. WM’s motto is “who comes here belongs here” and the flat out say that demonstrated interest is a huge factor. Visit, do a green and gold day in the fall (visits specifically for pre-professionals, fine arts, government and IR, STEM, Business), interview (and watch! They start to interview over the summer and registration for rising seniors opens soon after the Admissions office finishes with senior admission. So probably in the next 4-6 weeks. And fills fast), the optional essay isn’t optional. And, they love ED. If you can’t visit, take advantage of remote options. And ED is a sizable bump.
WM considers demonstrated interest, but it's a far lower factor than everything else (as per the common data set). ED offers a bump, but not a big difference in grade/test score profiles of ED vs RD candidates. But showing demonstrated interest is easy so no reason not to do it!

This is easy to miss. None of the essays are explicitly "why VT" but DS answered the question about a goal and how you work to achieve it by talking about his career goal and how the VT program would help him get there. He was accepted.

+1 and trying to demonstrate interest when it’s not considered will annoy them, and likely hurt you.

If school has ED, then they expect you to ED to demonstrate interests.

If you live within a few hours of a college that values DI, they will expect you to make an in person visit. And make your presence known either via an official tour, a program offered for prospective students, an interview, or letting admissions know you were there (in case you cannot get a spot on a tour).
