Is the valve accessible from the back? It sounds like he wants to replace the valve -- "ensure mixing valve was copper" -- and that usually requires more access than you can get just by removing the trim.
If that's the case, you pick out a mixing valve and the trim to go with it.

There are different models for a shower-only and a shower with tub.
