OP here, my kids are too little for AAP at the moment, we'll cross that bridge if we get there.

OP here, I value diversity, good to hear that people have had a good experience here. I posted about South Lakes a few weeks ago, and it sounds like a great school, too.

Hughes has a beautiful new renovation. My DC attended during Covid and the renovation so didn't have the normal MS experience. For the time he was there, he had a good experience. He only had one bad experience with one teacher. I have a friend who teaches there and likes it.

It has a good chunk of kids from lower income/immigrant households that bothers some parents. It was not a problem for us, we liked the diversity.

But if it is your neighborhood school, the magnet program is your school. The AAP is a separate admission in 3rd grade, but it still is part of the magnet program. The magnet program just means you have extra "specials" and more science curriculum embedded.

Magnet program is a curriculum for the whole school at Hunter Woods. What it means is that there are kids outside of the neighborhood who can opt to go to Hunter Woods for ES (if they make the lottery). Our DC went there a while back--lovely school! We moved before MS (we were in a townhouse that got too small for our family and found a SFH in another pyramid in FCPS) so can't comment on Hughes.

We are looking at a house zoned to Hunter Woods ES. I'm confused about the arts & sciences magnet program. Is it a separate school within a school that students have to apply to, or is it the curriculum for the whole school? The website does not make this easy to understand!
