98th Percentile would be borderline for FCPS. I know that there are some school districts that use 95th percentile and higher but there is not enough info to be able to help OP. OP would be best talking to their Teacher or doing research on their counties program.

If you weren't informed back when the results first came out that your child was automatically in pool, then the scores weren't high enough to make the initial cutoff for consideration and it doesn't sound like you submitted on their behalf.

If you think your child belongs in AAP, then next year, fill out the parent referral sheet by the deadline (all dates are available on FCPS website) and submit it with work samples and the parent questionnaire. The school will fill out their piece and add work samples and submit the packet to the county for review.


FCPS does not announce the in-pool numbers when scores are sent home. The notification that kids are in-pool comes a week or so before applications are do. It doesn’t matter in this case but for others reading this topic.

No it isn’t. The description specifically says “or similar programs elsewhere”.


The description also leads with “Primarily for discussion of Fairfax County's Advanced Academic Programs…” So sure, it’s open to other discussion, but since this is a DC-area forum and primarily a discussion on the FCPS AAP program, OP probably should’ve specified that they weren’t looking for FCPS AAP answers to their questions.


Fairfax county is not the only county in the DMV with advanced programs. Though it apparently is one of the easiest to get your kids in to. There are other programs, just so you know. I’m not sure why Jeff gave Fairfax special treatment but given that the description says it includes similar programs you could do with being a little less less exlusionary.

Every area uses it differently. 98th percentile would be considered a lower score for FCPS LIV program, our version of Advanced Learning. There are other areas that include kids with scores in the 95th percentile. You will need to talk to your local school and find out how they use the info.

FCPS AAP eligibility results have been out for a few weeks. You can use DC's cogat results to apply for AAP next year (in December 2023). 98%tile is either amazing or average, depending on DC's elementary school.
